ART ALLIANCE 51:

The policy shift of the Nigerian government in favour of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) has resulted in many states dropping Fine Art as a subject from the curriculum. Consequently, visual artists are concerned that the younger generation might go through primary and secondary school - and maybe even tertiary education - without exciting their aesthetic sense: ? Why should things be orderly? Why should the environment be pleasing to the eye?   Why is it made more conscious through art. How should beauty be perceived? Failure to heed this has an adverse effect on one’s mental health. We, the visual artists of Art Alliance 51, have decided to fill this gap, hence this second edition of Art Arising.

Art Alliance 51 comprises various art groups and individuals with a common passion: the development of the visual arts’ industry in Nigeria. We hope to do this by creating platforms for synergizing the potentials of all members towards building a stronger industry. We are inspired by one goal, one mission and one focus: to become the preferred platform for engaging the visual arts’ industry in Nigeria. Art Alliance 51 is a non-profit charity organisation. As an artist-run and led organisation, our members have committed their time, along with their financial, human and social resources, to realise this vision. We are no longer prepared to wait on the elusive ‘other’ to help. In the past, we erroneously looked to the government to rise up to its responsibilities, but no longer.

Our first event was in 2014 with the Creative Young Minds workshop for children; our most recent was the 2018 three-person exhibition at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja. With more than twelve participants already registered, this year’s Art Arising 51 is scheduled to show at the National Museum, Onikan, Lagos, from August 21 until September 3, 2021. More than one hundred works of fine, decorative and applied arts will be exhibited, with special focus on modern and contemporary art. The exhibitors range from recent graduates to experienced artists with international exhibiting experience.
