MOTIVATION STATEMENT

Since 1990, after I graduated from the university, I have delved into different media in search of how best to express my art. My primary purpose is to produce art that will remain relevant and endure. In the early 1990s I painted mainly watercolours and I became known as a watercolourist.

I have worked extensively in acrylics; my solo exhibitions in 2003 and 2004 showed a large collection of acrylics paintings. I have and still produce works in oils and pastel.

As a native of oil-producing Delta State, I have long had an interest in the environmental degradation that has been a consequence of oil exploration. This interest has been reflected both in my art. For instance, between 1995 and 1997 my works reflected the challenges of living in the Niger Delta. Two subsequent exhibitions on this theme were sponsored by Texaco and Totalfinaelf oil companies.

More specifically, as a feminist I have been in the forefront of the campaign for upholding the rights of the girl-child in Nigeria. My works on those themes were exhibited at the Female Genital Mutilation exhibition in Canada, Germany, the UK and the US.

I currently operate an NGO called Future-Perfect, In 2001, we collaborated with the Rivers State Ministry of Culture and Tourism on a workshop for empowering women and young people. I also operate the Yemaja Gallery and train students on industrial attachment and apprentices.

For a while I have been experimenting with mixed media methods using mirrors. In 2007, I introduced print–making methods into my experiments. I now produce what I call paintergraph. This is a unique blend of painting, mixed media, installation and print-making. I am always in search for new content for my experiments.
